Kavalan Waltz

Kavalan Waltz, a freestanding villa in Yilan, is a three-story building that stands among low hills where broad-leaved trees abound and thrive, and owns a yard with a lush lawn. Its modern, simple design and white-tone rustic façade serve to blend the structure into the natural environment, constructing a second dream home.
The layout is roughly square, with the first floor as a public space to entertain relatives and friends or serve recreational functions, while on the second and third floors are the bedrooms and living space for the family. In keeping with the homeowner’s love of nature, crude wood and stone in particular, the designer applies an abundance of natural materials to the design, bringing the construction and the natural environment even closer together. The flow starts with the entrance in the middle of the façade. Inside the house, what comes straight into view is a statement wall piled up with gray stone bricks, which effectively blocks excessive sun exposure for this east-facing mansion and constructs a separate entryway of composed grandeur as well. Artfully planted in an opening of the statement wall is a Buddhist pine tree that not only acts as a focal point full of Zen, but reflects the pleasing natural flavor outside.
Its interior design features alternate geometric forms, with curves and rounded edges applied to the ceiling and windows and tied with vertical as well as horizontal lines in the layout. In so doing, the interplay of square and round makes for enriched visual layers and a deepened sense of space. The arrangement of furniture and lighting also centers on the concept of square and round in nature, creating a warm, harmonious contrast in the space. Besides, works of wood and stone sculpture collected by the homeowner are artfully integrated into the design of the first-floor foyer, the living room, the dining room and the hallway, so that these artworks not simply grace the space but look their best in it.
