Meilizhou Church

"Meilizhou Church is located in Liangzhu Cultural Village in Hangzhou. It’s made by pine wood with concrete structure to be blended into the surrounding forest. The design is intended to explore the unity and purity of space and nature.



CONTROL THE LIGHT: In order to balance the brightness of the interior space, photoelectric glass was proposed by lighting consultant for the altar side façade. Its translucency can be adjusted base on the intensity of outdoor sunlight condition during the day. As night falls, the photoelectric glass gradually becomes fully transparent. A small floodlight in the backyard is used to mimic the natural light and to illuminate the cross from outside. It helps to form a silhouette icon, which emphasizes the religious symbol.



RECEIVE THE LIGHT: floodlights are hidden at the bottom of the sloped ceiling on both sides to uplight the ceiling with 30° beam angle cross-aiming. And the light fades from the spire to the bottom to express the height of the space and the wood texture of the slope ceiling. They provide pure indirect lighting for a calm and comfortable space. At the same time, the linear lights beside the flooflights define boundary of the space and add the sense of lightness.



WORSHIP THE LIGHT: When prayers walk inside the church, they can see a silhouetted pine wood cross. When they turned around after praying, they would be surprised to find that the pine wood cross has become a self-illuminating cross with a wood grain finish. It implies the eternity and purity after praying."
