Tehotihuacan

City of Gods, place where all gods where born. This would be the fertile field to arise our next collection.

Balmaceda is a Mexican design studio, exclusively dedicated to rug design and production in India and Nepal. Every year the team makes a trip to encounter with our weaver brothers in India, and it’s hallucinating how each time we go back, we feel at home. We can find plenty of similitudes between the Indian and Mexican culture; flowers, colors, tastes, including weaving techniques. It feels like if a thousand years before, these two cultures had a real strong connection and where close to each other.

In our new collection Teotihuacan, we managed to create a cultural bridge and a dialogue between these magical cultures filled with mysticism. We pay tribute to our Mexican culture and origins, and we celebrate the Indian culture that has given us shelter to develop this dream, as to now, the biggest adventure of our lives.

From our origins we take the classic flatweaves achieved on a pedal loom in the state of Oaxaca, also the organic geometry (pictorial reference of the artistic movement ‘’Mexican Geometrism" 1970-1908). This collection is an abstraction of the edifications and forms of the Tehotihuacan Pyramids. Junction of united rocks, that when settled, form pyramids in this city of warriors and Gods. From our ally, India; we accomplish the textures through knots made by hand, we execute bulky textures that allude the skin of the feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl.

The colors represent the mix of these two cultures, red, orange and gold that refer to the contact with deities. Blue and pink make reference to solemnity and royalty, in both reigns. Dyes that transform from something solid to a mixture chaos. It’s a metaphor to the mingle of visions and ideas that you can perceive in each country, coexisting.

Each piece has by name, some of the years of excavation that took place in Teotihuacan.
