This project is a renovation of the lighting within the sanctuary of a 1940s Catholic church. Our team was tasked with updating lighting throughout the sanctuary to accommodate an ever-changing program throughout the day i.e., daily service, weddings, vigils, as well as introducing energy savings and maintenance strategies for the church. In response, LED warm-dim technology was introduced into the space, allowing for brighter services and the ability to create warm and intimate environments when needed. A new hybrid of wired and wireless dimming system was introduced to replace wallbox dimmers and switches that had been added over the years. iPhone control of each custom scene was crucial, as the priests requested access to the multiple scenes for their services throughout the day. Existing conditions such as mechanical ducts above aisle soffits were considered when determining the addition of new lighting. Design additions revolved around properly illuminating the altar, reinforcing the archway across the nave, and introducing lighting at the aisles. Adjustable lighting setbacks were carefully studied in determining locations to properly accent statues and iconography.
