“These new lights are amazing, great fun!” - Bridlington Resident.
Bridlington is a popular coastal town in East Yorkshire that boasts a charming seafront with panoramic views of Bridlington Bay. Featuring two award-winning beaches, Bridlington has recently experienced an ambitious redevelopment project to transform one area which includes the renewal of paving, street furniture and lighting, with a clear ambition to revitalise the public realm and attract visitors to the town throughout the year.
Award-winning independent lighting design consultancy Sutton Vane Associates was appointed by SWECO, Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy company, to design a lighting scheme to reimagine the space and add vibrancy to the site with an exciting new and colourful look whilst, at the same time, providing a practical benefit after dark.
Central to the regeneration was the innovative installation of new lighting elements. This included several completely bespoke illuminated totems that formed the centrepiece of the new lighting scheme. The totems are beautifully lit from top to bottom and incorporate colour-changing functionality which can be set for different occasions, such as the celebration of holidays and seasonal events.
In addition, Sutton Vane Associates made use of an inground linear lighting solution to further enhance the walkways along the seafront. Given the site’s coastal location, the lighting needed to be able withstand sometimes harsh and highly variable weather conditions. The lighting is able to cope with the extreme weather conditions sometimes associated with this Yorkshire seaside town.
Welcomed by locals and tourists alike, the much-anticipated regeneration scheme has been part-funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Government’s Local Growth Fund, awarded by York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership (YNYER LEP).
From conception through to completion, Sutton Vane Associates was keen to create a lighting design to perfectly complement this impressive regeneration project. The result is better than anticipated, and Bridlington seafront now has a new lease of life offering a fun and vibrant location during the day, that is both attractive and colourful at night.
