Design of "Northeasterners Chewing the Fat" Dialect Cards

Language is an important carrier of culture and form of representation. The Northeast Chinese dialect, which is considered as a witty, humorous, straightforward and tough, has intense local characteristics and rustic atmosphere. The positive development of the Northeast Chinese dialect responds to the sustainable development of Northeast Chinese culture, and contributes to a good language ecosystem. This work is a collection of paper cards that resorts the symbol elements of Northeast Chinese dialect and makes it visualized. With the color scheme inspired by classic colors of “Da Hua Ao” (Northeast large flower cloth padded jacket) and in the form of solid class (typically green) and non-solid class (typically red), the cartoon-based paper cards show sound variant words, formatted words and featured words phonologically, grammatically and lexically. Cartoon images are artistic, popular and entertaining, more approachable and readily acceptable to young consumers. Texts and pictures help user learn the dialect and implied meanings in the game play. The design aim of this work, learning through play, is attained by an affordable and popular form of communication.
