On The Verge of Falling

City planning and architecture design has long been seen as an industry that is far from the public’s reach. The top-down approach and workings has resulted in a lack of public interest and awareness. The reason is complicated, yet we question if we could bring architecture closer to people.

“On the Verge of Falling” is a spatial installation that transform the room into a giant claw machine. Through this popular gaming machine, visitors will be building and rebuilding an imaginary vertical village of HK.

The room itself turns into a simulation of city. Shapes of selected architecture and urban space is translated and abstracted into simple geometry building blocks. The player can then build their vision of the city through the familiar controls of joystick that everyone knows so well.

Beyond just a game room, the work is also a data-collection machine. It records players’ selection of architecture and choice of urban spaces. Considering the after-life, the construction details and the shapes and proportions of building blocks are tailored for re-use and recycling friendly.
