How can an iconic public building, located in a highly urbanised area adjacent to a canal, be created so that it integrates function and environment? The Hangzhou Canal Grand Theatre offers itself as a stellar example.



The architectural form of the theatre is inspired by cultural traditions and its immediate surroundings – reminiscent of the strokes of an ink painting, as well as the ripples caused by meandering, flowing water. The building’s facade presents traditional architectural window pattern in a modern reinterpretation, bringing a fresh take on the local culture and a rich visual expression to the city.



With functional arrangement and programmatic planning at the heart of its design, the Hangzhou Canal Grand Theatre’s layout is configured via multiple sunken plazas. Views out to nature guide visitors through various underground commercial spaces and interactive exhibition venues, as they walk up the stairs from the main entrance and enter the theatre’s first floor. The entrance corridor serves as an exhibition space, as visitors can experience the history and culture of the canal shown on display. The main hall of the 1200-seat multifunctional theater is designed for large-scale productions, and is intended to become the signature venue for cultural performances in Hangzhou.



Whether visitors stroll along the park with the Grand Theatre beside them, or look out from the roof of the theatre; they are able to enjoy a picturesque scene of the building set against the natural landscape of the canal that has been flowing for thousands of years. The city, nature, and history all converge here in the Hangzhou Canal Grand Theatre – an architectural landmark that marks a new cultural era for the area.
