Cliff Restaurant

The Cliff Restaurant is situated in Dapi Mountain, Xunxian, China. This mountain is steeped in history and culture, boasting a grand stone Buddha carved 1,600 years ago and a thousand-year-old temple. The restaurant is perched on the edge of a cliff, adjacent to the temple, and features a spacious garden for outdoor dining, and an outdoor terrace that provides a distant view of the city. Dapi Mountain is a World Geological Heritage Site, and as such, the design of the restaurant had to be carefully planned to ensure minimal impact on the mountain. The design of the restaurant draws inspiration from the local intangible cultural heritage of mud Gugu. This centuries-old handicraft involves sculpting clay into the shape of a naive bird. The building's smooth outline slowly spreads out on the site, much like a Gugu bird spreading its wings and landing atop the mountain. The building's main body features a rustic style, incorporating local natural materials such as molten stone. The roof is made of a mixture of steel and wood, providing a large span while also imparting a warm interior space. As the restaurant is located on the edge of a cliff, all materials were chosen in small-scale models to ensure they could be transported up the mountain. Local villagers were employed for the construction, utilizing local craftsmanship in all processes. The project is expected to be completed in May 2023 and will become an integral part of the Dapi Mountainupon its opening.
