The Coin Collection Program launched by Hong Kong Monetary Authority was a creative solution based on the concept of a mobile bank at your doorstep. This is the first of its kinds in the world, engaging two 10-tonnes vehicles equipped with automatic coin counting machines to collect coins from the public and serve the community in the neighborhood. The exterior of the two Coin Carts was based on the design created by the champion of the "Mobile Coin Collection Kiosk Design Competition” with the participation of secondary school students.

Each Cart with a size of 2.4mW x 9mL x 3.7mH is tailored-made into customer area and highly secured area in compliance with bank security infrastructure. It runs either with external power supply or power generator and the glass windows allow ample natural light for energy saving. The cart is installed with TV screen and window panel to showcase the flow of service. The customer service representatives would inspect the coins to filter out defect ones before the coin counting machine automatically count the amount and the machine is able to count coins of mixed denominations together. Customers can choose to exchange their spare coins for banknotes or add value to their stored value facilities. Upon the customer confirmation, a receipt will be issued. The cart is also fitted with an electrical wheelchair lift to cater the needs of physically challenged.

The two Coin Carts collect coins from the public at every district on a rotational basis and free of charge. The coins collected are then recirculated to meet public demand, making circulation more efficient and reducing the need for minting new coins. The project promotes environmental friendliness through encouraging the public to channel back coins to the circulation system and incorporates CSR elements as citizens can donate their small change to charity. This service has been well received by the public and is considered an innovative and environmental-friendly programme to enhance the coin circulation.
