In the novel The Great Gatsby, the protagonist, Gatsby, was depicted as a character who had been showing a great desire, ambition, curiosity, and positive attitude for life since he was young, cementing himself as the source of the power in this novel. Taking the concept in The Great Gatsby as a reference in my design, I created an ineffably gaudy universe through the use of materials. In the design, vivid colors of strong ornamental nature were used to depict the prosperity and power of the times. In terms of furniture, I combined black and gold, a contrasting color pair compatible to the atmosphere of a king’s banquet, to highlight the dominant demeanor of an generation’s leader. Decorative ribs and geometric figures were widely used on the walls and ceilings to delineate the vigor and motion of the industrial age. Everything in the space is seemingly burgeoning, growing, and spreading. In the industrial age, golden symbolized dignity and power, while the most representative color in The Great Gatsby is green. The green light is a symbol of Daisy in Gatsby's dream and the beacon of his life, guiding him to realize his dream. This inspired us to select the gold-green combination as the space design keynote.
