The Urban Village project seeks to revitalize D.C.’s Columbia Heights neighborhood by adding 295 residential units with 80% affordability. The project is subsidized in part through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. (HUD).

Given the affordability requirement, it was vital to maintain the same quality across both unit types (affordable and market rate). As such, our design team developed innovative layout techniques to minimize costs while ensuring the highest quality elements, amenities, and finishes.

The housing complex is an integration of two uniquely constructed, yet interrelated, structures. Both buildings are configured in 'podium' style, standing side by side, and are separated by a vertical firewall. To add connectivity, our design connects both buildings using a three-story bridge. This inventive solution not only facilitates easy transit but also provides ample space for truck access and maintenance of on-site utilities. Due to the nature of both buildings, the complex is thoughtfully divided into two zones, each with unique design elements that seek to harmonize the urban landscape with a natural aesthetic. To achieve this, our design integrates both concrete and wood frame elements.
