The client’s brief was to design a space that fused the elements of traditional chinese interior design with a modern twist.
At the core of modern Chinese interior design lies a deep respect for tradition, often paying homage to ancient philosophies like Feng Shui and Confucianism. Elements such as yin and yang balance, the five natural elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), and the flow of Qi (energy) are carefully considered to ensure a sense of harmony and positive energy within the space.
Materials played a pivotal role in the bridging of traditional and modern design. The use of traditional materials included wood, bamboo, stone, and silk; whilst modern was portrayed by metal, mirrors and leather, reflecting a connection to the environment and promoting a sense of balance and tranquility. Furniture and decor also transform the traditional design elements into contemporary functionality, allowing for a seamless integration of old and new.
Color palette choices are influenced by traditional Chinese art, with browns, golds, blacks taking center stage and pastel colours to add a modern twist. These colors symbolize prosperity, luck, happiness, and stability, adding a rich vibrancy to the interiors.
Spatial arrangements emphasize flow and openness, drawing inspiration from ancient architectural principles. The concept of open spaces with designated functional zones allows for the free movement of energy while maintaining a cohesive and functional layout.
Moreover, incorporating modern technology and sustainable practices is a growing trend in modern Chinese interior design. Energy-efficient lighting, smart home systems, and sustainable materials align with contemporary living standards, demonstrating a progressive approach to design.
In summary, this project elegantly marries the richness of Chinese culture and history with the practicalities and aesthetics of the contemporary world. It is a testament to the timeless beauty and adaptability of traditional design principles in the context of modern living.
