Peetri Plats, also known as Peetri Square, stands at the eastern border of Estonia, serving as the gateway to the city of Narva—a symbolic union of Estonia and Europe encapsulated in the city's slogan, "Europe begins here." Currently, Peetri Square accommodates private and public vehicular traffic, pedestrian walkways, commercial areas, tourist spaces, and occasional event venues. Recognizing the need for transformation, the city envisions Peetri Square as a vibrant public space fostering social interactions, cultural exchange, and historical showcases.

Maleväljak offers an ingenious solution to the challenge of traffic circulation and hosting events within Peetri Plaza. Just as chess requires calculated moves, the layout strategically balances vehicular and pedestrian flows, ensuring efficient traffic circulation while seamlessly transitioning into event spaces.

Shared Space Philosophy:

In the design of Maleväljak, the alternating squares of the chessboard pattern contribute to a shared space philosophy, encouraging a harmonious coexistence of vehicles and pedestrians. Rather than segregating traffic lanes, the design promotes a low-speed, shared traffic approach, fostering a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment. This fluid interaction aligns with the call for efficient land use while prioritizing human interaction.

Enhanced Public Interaction:

Mirroring the idea of public spaces as hubs for social interaction, the chessboard layout fosters natural congregation points. Each square becomes a meeting place, encouraging conversations, artistic expressions, and community gatherings. This arrangement aligns with the dynamic nature of cities, offering flexible spaces that evolve with the needs of the community.

Integration of Green Spaces:

The alternating squares of the chessboard serve as platforms for urban greenery. Lush vegetation softens the urban landscape, providing cleaner air, habitats for wildlife, and resilience against heatwaves. This integration aligns with the role of green spaces in improving urban environments, contributing to a sustainable and vibrant cityscape.
