Our design for this house in Byron Bay would not be possible elsewhere. It is uniquely influenced by the land upon which it will be built, with the energy, character of views of the surrounding environment flowing though the entire design. The result breaks down barriers between inside and out, drawing people, air and nature itself within.

There is a purity to the central pavilion’s geometry. Its grandeur and theatre sweeps the visitor inside, then offers an intimacy at a human scale, then returns as the building opens out to embrace the landscape beyond.

The kitchen boldly opens up an entire wall, giving the central pavilion light and clear purpose. Meanwhile, central services (such as laundries and powder rooms) remain hidden. Outside, the garden pavilion by the pool is always open to sea breezes.

Embracing the wonderful temperate climate, when the glazed facade is opened in warmer months, barriers between the interiors and the landscape fall away. By contrast in winter, the house cocoons.

There are two pavilions flanking the central pavilion. One of these in the main bedroom suite with private living quarters, and the other is the children’s pavilon, designed for the second and third generation with living rooms and wellness centres. Guests are accommodated in separate suites. All of these spaces provide natural circulation of movement, with generous space and intuitive planning. Like the expressive form, the selection of materials is of the earth - stone, steel, timber and glass - which is repeated throughout in subtle colours and finishes. With great care, the landscape is regenerating indigenous flora to seamlessly connect with the wilderness.

At its essence, this house welcomes you, inspires you, challenges you, nurtures you. It offers you a series of sensory experiences which are rarely found in one residence. Its sense of flow is felt quite literally as light sea breezes move around you, and as you pass through the spaces with ease.
