Chengdu MixC Shopping Complex is located in Chengdu. Unlike most typical shopping malls, Chengdu MixC Shopping Complex has a huge plaza that can be used for a diversity of multi-layered programmes. The design of the plaza focuses on enabling hybridisation of activities and lifestyles in the public realm.

【BATHED IN THE SEA】

The origin of the design is based on Zaha Hadid's concept of "Impressionist Chengdu" for the project. The city of Chengdu is known for its trendiness, which also translates to tides in Chinese. Abstraction of "The Sea" becomes the unifying concept. Our interpretation focuses on light, color and moments captured in time to reflect the characteristics of Impressionist Art. Movements of curvilinear waves are frozen in time and transformed into experiences within the space. The meta-reality of water flows captured in time becomes the representation for infinite changes of city vibes and endless imaginations for future potentials.

The design aims to simulate the timeless flow of the ocean. The emptiness of the former plaza is now filled with three animated plazas with differentiated themes and characters. The motion of the waves is materialized into site-specific morphology and multifaceted emotions with mutual resonance and transference.

Tidal Plaza is an important node of foot traffic , it is the most versatile hard plaza capable of hosting a wide variety of programmes and events. The space is characterized by waves of blue integrated in the patterning of plaza pavage, creating dynamism for public activities.

Wavy Garden is characterized by curvilinear waves of open lawn, leisure pockets and island shops. The flow of the garden provides a relaxed openspace for people to casually lie down on the sloped lawn or gather at the seating edges.

Water Plaza is characterized by interactive water features to elevate the participation of the openspace experience. Different modes of water interactions have successfully activated the public realm and become a hotspot for family visitors.

We integrated different shades of ocean varicolors in the paving through complex algorithm of parametric design. The result is a carpet of graduated pattern using custom-made precast aggregate hexagon pavers.
