Since its reopening in April 2023, the Musée Savoisien in Chambéry has represented the diverse history of the region across all eras from the Palaeolithic Age to the Middle Ages to the present day. Over 2,000 exhibits from the fields of culture, clothing, economy, religion and much more present a comprehensive picture of the development of the region and society.
Licht Kunst Licht has developed a functional and scenic lighting concept for the listed architecture that guide visitors through the background and history of the site and its inhabitants in an informative and exciting way.
In the interior, daylight-dominated areas alternate with artificial lighting solutions, whereby the focus is always on the conservation requirements and the needs of the various exhibits. While the shop and entrance area as well as the temporary exhibition are located on the ground floor, the permanent exhibition is located on the first and second floors. Depending on the architecture and exhibits, adjustable spotlights, linear LED profiles or downlights provide balanced ambient and accent lighting.
A special highlight is the chapel on the 2nd floor of the permanent exhibition. The sacral appeal of the architecture is complemented by religious objects and offers an extraordinary spatial experience within the museum. The ceiling of the chapel in particular is a work of art in its own right and is softly illuminated by indirect lighting located on the flanking ledges. Adjustable spotlights are placed on the cornice and set the scene for both the magnificent altar and other exhibits on a wooden podium. Due to the uneven nature of the ledge in the room apse, it was not possible to implement hidden indirect lighting here. In this case, the aforementioned spotlights take over the illumination of the vault cap.
