90 minutes east of Shanghai’s CBD, Lingang is rapidly emerging as a center for business and tourism. Once a coastal town, Lingang’s Sanzao Gang developed over a thousand years ago as a salt manufacturing hub before the land slowly expanded eastward into the sea. Along with salt making, other local traditions developed, most notably weaving of colorful ribbons for use in clothing and practical daily items. Located along the Sanzhao Port, this project is the flagship of a new modern themed water town aimed ensure that cultural heritage is retained for future generations.
Centered on a resort-style hotel and cultural immersive theater, the project also includes a community serving office building, supermarket and F&B. The theater is set as the central jewel of the project. The office building and supermarket are situated at the east end of the site to better serve locals. Prominently positionsed at the west corner, The L-shaped hotel maximizes guest room and amenity views toward the water. Vehicle entry to this site allows for cars to enter and drop off at hotel / theater and quickly go down to parking within a very small area in order to maximize the site area available for landscape, pedestrian circulation and outdoor activities. A large “site window” carves through the building provides immediate visual and pedestrian connection to the waterfront. A covered outdoor lounge , landscaped terraces with “salt pools”, and private balconies provide visitors and guests with a variety of ways to experience the view.
Situated at the “post-card shot” for everyone arrving at the destination water town, the Architecture is intended to strike a strong first impression and embed a lasting memory. An iconic woven screen facing the river joins the various building elements together with a common identity. Vernacular forms and materials are used with a modern attitude that respects the past while looking toward the future. Sweeping roofs, shaped green ceramic tiles, and terra cotta screens are unmistakably Chinese inspired, reflecting bamboo which was so important to local industry, and recalling the woven ribbon crafts which reflect the joyful human spirit that brightens normal everyday life.
