In 2022, Shanghai underwent a citywide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many residents experienced food shortages while confined to their homes. This habitat design project envisions a more sustainable and resilient way of living, where the community can come together to produce their own food. By integrating food production with residential spaces, the design not only cultivates a stronger sense of community and encourages communication across generations but also fosters a greener and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

The modular design of the living units draws inspiration from traditional Shanghai-style dwellings known as “Nongtang” where units are interconnected by rows of alleys. However, the design takes a more innovative approach by vertically stacking the Nongtang structures and incorporating vertical circulation elements to increase density efficiently. The production greenhouse and growing beds are carefully strategized based on sun orientation, ensuring maximum productivity. Within the community, a food market and communal kitchen serve as hubs for neighborly interactions and food exchange. Collectively, these elements offer local and affordable goods, improving the resilience of dense urban districts in Shanghai.

In the heart of our design, a diagonal pedestrian street emerges, cutting through the dwelling cluster with purpose and intrigue. This innovative pathway is not just a thoroughfare; it is a vibrant public space that beckons users to connect, interact, and thrive.

Lined with lush greenery and interspersed with seating areas, the pedestrian street offers a respite from the urban bustle, inviting residents and visitors alike to pause, linger, and appreciate the surrounding architecture and landscape. The diagonal orientation of the street creates dynamic views and perspectives, drawing people in and encouraging exploration.
