The project is located in Guangzhou, China. This conceptual design for a bus terminal emphasizes occupant wellness, high performance, sustainability, and optimized use of space. The rise of air travel and high-speed rail has led many people to choose faster transportation, resulting in reduced bus usage and mostly empty bus terminals. However, China's vast population still relies heavily on buses for family reunions during major festivals like the Spring Festival, leading to overcrowded terminals during peak times.
To address this, the design uses a layered approach, like puff pastry, to overlap various functions with the bus parking area, maximizing space utilization and alleviating congestion during peak periods. Furthermore, as Guangzhou is a city with hot and humid climate which makes natural ventilation a favorable solution of improving thermal comfort. The design incorporates semi-open spaces, and detailed climate and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analyses are conducted to determine the optimal configuration for efficient natural ventilation, corresponding to thermal comfort and energy efficiency. This approach balances efficiency and comfort, providing a solution to the challenges faced by contemporary bus terminals.
