Country / Region

China

Hainan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (including Provincial Occupational Disease Hospital) is situated in Jiangdong New District, Haikou city, Hainan province, China, with a total gross floor area of 199,000 square meters and 1,000 inpatient beds. It is designed to be a garden-style hospital that reflects the region’s architectural elements, eastern aesthetics and neo-Chinese charm.

Courtyard-House Fashion & Sunshades

Situated in the tropics, Haikou gets lots of sunshine all year around. The design of the main medical care area gives full play to the cooling effect of the shady areas. Buildings in the area are of courtyard-house fashion, which is typical in northern Hainan. Their dense and orderly layouts bring plenty of shady spots to beat the heat. Besides, the sunshades, attached horizontally and vertically to the building, block sunlight and reduce the amount of solar gain as well.

Garden-style Hospital

The hospital landscape is marked with a central garden enclosed by buildings, high and low. To the west of the central garden lies the core medical service zone, the south the TCM expert clinics, the east offices and research facility, and north the reserved land for Phase-II development; and the overall layout of buildings overlooking the central garden is in line with the local courtyard-house fashion. The central garden, bathed in sunlight, serves as a “lung” for the entire complex with its lush greenery. In addition, the site is interspersed with roof gardens, yards and lawns. Having these elements is therapeutic, which coincides with the traditional Chinese medicine’s emphasis that nature is a tonic for physical well-being.

Traditional Chinese Architectural Elements

Pitched-roof buildings look to be from a bygone era. A closer examination shows that the roofs are a mixture of both the ancient look and modern techniques. Wooden beams and imbrex once used as part of the roofs are now replaced with metal and ceramic roofs, making them both aesthetic and functional.
