"Expressing Ambitions" is a design that harmoniously blends Eastern philosophy with Western modernist principles. It merges the traditional Chinese concept of "liubai" (the art of leaving blank spaces in painting and calligraphy) with the Western modernist tenet of "less is more," creating a space that is minimalist yet rich in meaning. The designer skillfully employs the basic elements of points, lines, and planes to craft a space that adheres to universal aesthetic standards while maintaining a unique character. This design not only honors traditional culture but also reflects an understanding of contemporary lifestyles.

Spatial Layout

As a middle unit of a townhouse, the layout of the design has been meticulously planned to enhance the sense of openness and depth. By removing unnecessary partitions, the sense of space in the basement and first floor has been expanded, transforming these two levels into a cohesive, open area. The basement’s skylights are preserved, ensuring ample natural light floods the interior, thereby improving the brightness of the space. The north-south corridor not only increases spatial fluidity but also establishes a stronger visual connection between the home and the outdoor garden. This open-plan layout defines different functional areas—such as the living room, dining room, and study—through the strategic arrangement of furniture. Each area is distinct yet maintains a visual connection, creating a layered effect reminiscent of the scattered perspective found in Chinese paintings.

Material Selection and Color Palette

The use of natural travertine and solid wood materials creates a warm and comfortable living atmosphere, perfectly complementing the warm-toned hidden lighting to establish a space that is both natural and harmonious. This preference for natural materials reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability and conveys the designer’s intent to evoke a sense of tranquility and peace through nature. The overall space adopts a soft color palette, dominated by whites and grays, with natural wood tones providing contrast, resulting in an ambiance that is fresh and refined. The warm lighting further enhances this cozy feeling, making the space even more inviting.
