In response to the call for old buildings renovation, Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town (OCT) Low Carbon Cities Programme extensively employs recyclable metal materials, environmentally friendly floors, wall materials and wall hangings to design boutique hotels, taking advantage of the limited height of the original space and the thick column grids, which perfectly indicates the concept of low carbon supplemented by business, fashion and recreation.

The first-floor lobby includes the functions of reception, lobby bar and bookstore, which is one of the highlights of this case. The lobby area is spacious, bright and magnificent, with leisure bar and half transparent bookshelves leading to the lobby bar and bookstore. The bookstore integrates the original pillars and bookshelves, and arranges them in order, forming more entertaining groups. With obsolete iron sheets attached to the materials surface, the thus formed distinctive texture is in contrast to the rough wood grains. Due to its restricted area, the bookstore is transformed into a small glass house, which further blends the interior with the exterior.

Sticking closely to OCT’s “Travel Culture”, the old-fashioned bicycles, traditional telephone booths, mysterious treasure boxes and embossed widgets with OCT industrial patterns are at every corner, with every facade delicately designed, and may even become famous tourist attractions on social media. There are multiple natural plants inside, which match the hotel gardens on the north of the bookstore and remind visitors of environmental awareness. Behind the reception is the elevator, whose walls and floor are also of simple but imposing marble texture, with a light box imprinted with OCT memory on the top, telling the stories to those waiting for a lift.
