In temporary lounge set-up for fairs/conventions, the materials/resources for the lounge setting would often be disposed after the event, leaving little to be reused/recycled. This lounge project allowed maximum materials and resources to be reused and recycled.

This is a VIP Lounge for an art fair featuring contemporary art from the Asia-Pacific.

The brief for this VIP Lounge called for a prominent and exclusive space within the fair, a 480sqm space intended for a capacity of 150 pax seated, 500 pax standing, at any time.

The Lounge served as a socialising area for clientele and guests; a meeting point for exhibitors, art collectors, curators and artists; a rest zone for VIPs; and a venue for by-invitation-only VIP events.

In addition, the brief called for flexible seating configuration, ease of installation and dismantling, and possibilities of recycling the resources used.

The lounge design was inspired by the kaleidoscopic characteristics of Asian arts and culture. This prompted the use of colourful textile, and carpet was selected as the singular material for the lounge set-up, for its properties and appropriateness:

• Soft to the touch

• Good acoustic properties

• Versatile as a furnishing material

• Wide colour range

• Associates well with lounges

The design is a composition of rolled and unrolled carpets – to become the floor, walls, seats, and forming spaces to cater for different levels of interactions, and for rest.

The Lounge offered the guests a soft appeal, a place of repose and relief from the visual fatigue of the exhibition, and a moment to contemplate in a space that is acoustically enhanced.

At the end of the fair, these carpets were rolled up and re-used for some other functions.
