The Wellford Gardens Care Home is a 65 Bedroom, new build, project in Oxfordshire, operated by the Order of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), exemplifies the transformative impact of evidence-based design, aimed at enhancing resident well-being, independence, and confidence. The design approach prioritized creating a homely, non-institutional atmosphere, all while managing tight budget constraints.
The project focused on crafting a welcoming environment that fostered connections to the local area. Key spaces such as the reception and bistro areas feature local artwork and murals that enhance the sense of place and community. The private dining room was designed to offer an intimate, home-like atmosphere, while the on-site salon replicates the look and feel of a high-street salon, providing a familiar and comforting environment for residents.
Dementia-friendly design principles were thoughtfully integrated throughout the care home. The design facilitates wayfinding with interactive and 3D artwork themed around local culture, making navigation intuitive and engaging for residents. The overall layout prioritizes dementia-enabling features, enhancing both functionality and comfort for those living with cognitive challenges.
Bespoke fabrics and wallcoverings were central to the design concept, with each element tailored to meet the practical needs of a care environment while also enhancing the visual appeal. These custom materials helped create a cohesive and personalized aesthetic that contributed to the home’s unique character.
Infection control measures were seamlessly integrated into the design, ensuring that all materials and finishes adhered to stringent hygiene standards without compromising the warmth and homeliness of the space.
The ultimate goal was to create a care environment that felt genuinely like home, balancing functional and medical needs with a warm, aesthetically pleasing design. By incorporating local themes, custom artwork, and dementia-enabling features, the project achieved a space where residents can feel safe, comfortable, and deeply connected to their surroundings. Despite budgetary and construction challenges, the design succeeds in creating a welcoming and functional space tailored to the needs of the residents.
