Flowscapes - Glacial Bathhouse

Situated next to a melting glacier in Iceland, the bathhouse offers a pilgrimage to witness the disappearing glacier and experience the flow of water. Studying the physical properties of vanishing ice caves, the design recreates moments of crystallization, the movement of air pockets, the cascading of water droplets, the formation of river flows, and the eventual convergence of water.

As visitors arrive at the bathhouse, they are drawn by the peaceful sound of running water from the small waterway. Once changed, the first bathing experience begins in the basalt column spa, where water slowly drips along the basalt columns, facilitating carbonate crystallization—a process of carbon sequestration. Guests can swim from the spa to the outdoor infinity pool and overlook the surrounding glaciers.

After enjoying the steamy sauna and soothing steam, guests can walk through the glowing underground crystal tunnel, where the mesmerizing movement of water shimmers in the ceiling above. The Walk of Faith is where the bathhouse intersects with the pristine glacier lake. A thin layer of shimmering water covers the path, creating a magical floating effect for visitors as they step across it. Beside the pathway, visitors can immerse themselves in the invigorating rock plunges of the natural lakes. There, hot water from the plunges meets the crisp, icy water from the glacier lake.

Upon completing the rituals, visitors can stroll along the scenic boardwalk, immersing themselves in sweeping panoramic views of the glacier. The boardwalk eventually leads to the Aurora Sleeping Lounge, where they can gaze at the dazzling night sky and the tranquil, untouched natural landscape.

The flow of water, subtle changes in water levels, and temperature variations in the rock plunges constitute a journey into the fragile sublime—a celebration of pristine nature and a tribute to the vanishing landscapes amidst global warming.
