The Maritime Silk Road Parlor, situated in the Shuangsha District of Guangzhou, serves as a distinctive commercial and exhibition venue. Its overall design is inspired from the Nanhai Temple, a renowned ancient structure in Guangzhou that dates back to the Sui Dynasty. This temple has stood the test of time for over 1400 years, and witnessed the historical transformations and cultural developments of the region.
In terms of architectural design, the Maritime Silk Road Parlor features the ancient arch of the Nanhai God Temple, seamlessly blended with contemporary architectural elements to create a space that is rich in historical significance and modern aesthetics. Through an insightful exploration and innovative reinterpretation of local culture, the designers have adeptly merged tradition with modernity, allowing the H Maritime Silk Road Parlor to go beyond the conventional limits of a commercial exhibition space and imparting it with a distinctive ambiance and cultural depth.
Upon stepping in, the design of the vestibule ceiling was inspired from the traditional Lingnan architectural element known as “four directions converging into a hall”. This design aims to enhance indoor ventilation and lighting, thereby improving the natural comfort of the environment. The designers employed an inverted design technique to represent the dynamic transformation of the space. The structural feature at the top, referred to as the “Glazed Mirror,” is also influenced by ancient temple complexes. By reinterpreting the morphological characteristics of historical architecture through a modern lens, the designers pay homage to ancient wisdom. The sand table presentation area is designed in a Zen-inspired minimalist style, with an art installation symbolizing “infinity” suspended above, implying the themes of renewal, regeneration, and sustainable development within the context of the old town.
The interior space features a neutral beige tone that complements the space structure, fostering a sense of solemnity and creating an overall atmosphere of tranquility and elegance. This choice also provides a subtle yet textured background for the content on display.
