Right in the heart of the bustling district of Namba in Osaka, the strikingly long and slender building is the shop which offers vegan sweets made purely from plant-based ingredients.
We wanted to create a space where we could directly expand on the images people have of veganism. The space was designed to emanate a natural and healthy feel as a way to increase awareness and accessibility to authentic vegan sweets. With an impactful design, we wanted the customers to naturally develop an image. The concept we came up with this was “the warmth of the soil.” After numerous discussions on which materials to use and how to utilize them, we decided on a minimal yet bold use of earthen walls. Although proven to be costlier than expected, we were adamant about keeping the texture of the clay and after several iterations, settled on Jolypate (plaster style finish) to create the current wall texture. Another feature we focused on was the arched design throughout the space. Closely collaborating and communicating with the craftsmen, we used the phrase “naturally enhance nature” to create a space that feels warm and cozy. The plasterers meticulously worked on crafting the gentle curves from the façade to the interior walls and ceilings. They went so far as to redo the work when necessary, ensuring every detail was perfect.
