For the people of the lagoon, the sea is a nurturing force, like a mother. The Tanka fishermen who live on the water and the Li villagers along the shore have been sustained by the sea for generations. To visitors, the lagoon offers a sacred retreat, a place where endless beauty unfolds and nature’s gentle touch is ever-present. Here, the sea is life, joy, and the source of everything.
The Voyage Chapel draws inspiration from this reverence for the sea, merging its influence with views of the picturesque lake to the west and the bustling urban landscape to the east. A tall tower stands at the southern tip of the triangular site, rising as a landmark and spiritual beacon close to the lake’s shore.
Undulating rooftops form terraced spaces facing the sea, where varying materials mimic ocean depths and shallows, reinforcing the sense of waves. Visitors strolling along these terraces are invited to feel as though they’re treading the waves. Beneath the terraces, beams of light layer together, creating the illusion of an underwater world and heightening the Chapel's sacred atmosphere.
Situated at a third of the way along the cycling route around the lagoon, the chapel’s design encourages visitors to see this space not as a final destination but as a pause in their journey, a spiritual haven that invites them to keep moving forward. Resembling a ship sailing across the waves, the Voyage Chapel captures the essence of riding the seas with the wind, a tribute to life by the water.
