Phone snatches happen all the time in London. As a MET police volunteer, my colleagues and I have been constantly working on this issue, while distributing leaflets and posters and engaging with the public about crime prevention during patrols. However, without extensive verbal explanations about how easily a thief can steal a phone, many people fail to recognise the importance of safeguarding their mobiles and belongings. This is often due to language barriers, lack of patience, or overconfidence—until they find themselves at the police station a few days later, reporting a stolen phone.

This led me to ask: How can we improve crime prevention materials to more effectively raise awareness about phone-snatching? Since phone snatches often occur in crowded settings, why not involve the audience in spotting these crimes themselves? This inspired me to create a story-driven booklet where readers assist a police officer in catching phone thieves in the street.

The booklet is designed to resemble a foldable phone in size and shape, making it easy to carry and read. As readers flip through it, the act mimics holding a real phone, subtly reminding them to safeguard their devices.
In the booklet, readers are prompted to help a police officer identify phone-
snatching behaviours in various scenarios. The officer provides clues about different criminal techniques, presented as stickers included in the booklet. After reading, these stickers can be used in multiple ways, either to decorate phone cases as a personal reminder to stay vigilant, or to be left in public spaces, spreading
awareness to a wider audience.

In addition to traditional prevention methods, I explored practical solutions to physically deter phone theft. For instance, a hidden phone pocket in underwear to keep it in a place thieves wouldn’t dare reach, or embedding a phone in a large glove—so if someone tries to steal it, they not only fail but might get punched.
