The Drifting Stones project, nestled in the mountain region of Chongqing, is a scenic addition to a private mountain retreat. Surrounded by lush greenery, towering cliffs, and gentle streams, the project consists of two structures: “The Stacks” and The Hut”. Visitors can ascend the steps for a panoramic view or relax in the pavilion and enjoy a tea with the soothing sound of water flowing.

This design was conceived from a serendipitous discovery of a uniquely placed granite boulder, whose flat top evoked the mystique of ancient artifacts. Inspired by this natural formation, the project was aptly named “The Drifting Stones”. It aims to harmonize architecture and nature, offering immersive perspectives that invite deeper connections with the environment.

“The Stacks” comprises ten floating stone slabs, symbolizing strength, balance, and the harmony of human craftsmanship in nature. Rising from the stream’s edge, the slabs gradually ascend, blending into the landscape. Cantilevered elements and natural materials create a sensory-rich path for visitors to experience the valley’s beauty. Beneath the Stacks, frameless glass walls enclose an interior space, preserving uninterrupted views while integrating modern materials like mirrors and steel to contrast with the rugged surroundings.

The nearby stone pavilion, “The Hut”, serves as a restroom with an ethereal design. Mirrored surfaces make it appear to vanish into the forest, while a suspended stone roof creates a surreal floating effect. The skylight channels light onto the washbasin, blending function with natural aesthetics.

Built with steel frameworks and cement infused with local stone powder, the project mimics the textures of its surrounding cliffs. The design juxtaposes heavy stone with reflective, weightless elements, creating a dialogue between nature and manmade. Ultimately, The Drifting Stones embodies a delicate balance of tranquility, architecture, and the enduring beauty of nature.
