"Bi Bo" is a 48.55-meter-high residential building located in Luchu District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
When designing this building, we believe that architecture is not just a combination of spaces, but a continuation of local culture and history. During the design process, we adopted the concept of "the rhythm of waves and light" to integrate natural landscapes and human spirit into the building’s exterior, creating a structure that is both modern and deeply connected to the local culture.
The curves and layering of the building's exterior are inspired by the ripples and light variations of the local ponds. What was once a calm, mirror-like pond surface, disturbed by biological activity, creates ripples and waves. Drawing from the local grass hut settlement culture of Luchu, weaving motifs are incorporated as core design elements. The building's exterior appears to overlap and intertwine like waves. At the same time, light flows through the building’s various openings and textural changes, creating shifting light and shadow effects over time, reflecting the dynamic and vibrant daily life of the local people.
Due to Taiwan's location on a fault line where earthquakes frequently occur, in order to reduce the building's weight, we utilize seismic-resistant, lightweight, high-strength, fireproof, weather-resistant, and corrosion-resistant GRC materials to create a dynamic and varied exterior design.
This building also adopts a seismic-resistant construction system, significantly enhancing the building's structural resilience and seismic performance. The systemized components reduce onsite human error and minimize rebar material loss and waste, ensuring both the safety and quality of the building while achieving energy-saving and carbon-reduction benefits.
In summary, this building is not only a manifestation of modern design but also a connection between innovative design techniques and local culture. It provides comfortable living spaces while becoming a part of the local community, fostering a deep connection with the urban fabric and its residents. Through this design, we aim to create a building that is not only functional but also a place that carries stories and culture, allowing every user who enters this space to feel the profound local human spirit.
