The landscape sculpture is located at the corner of the main entrance of Shenchong Village in Hainan Province, China. Its primary purpose is to highlight the village’s presence, attract tourists, and invite them to explore its history and culture.
The design features a 10-meter-radius circular space called the “Eye of Shenchong,” preserving the existing landscape trees as much as possible. Elevated along the ring road of the island tourist highway, the circular structure rests on a base made of the region’s distinct oblique volcanic stone walls. This creates an iconic entrance while maintaining the street corner’s openness. The village name stone has been relocated to the center of the square to strengthen villagers' collective memory.
The main body of the installation forms a circular passage 0.8 meters wide—just enough for two people to pass sideways. Its height tapers from 3 meters at the entrance to 2 meters at the end, providing an immersive linear experience. The loop’s end also serves as a viewing platform facing the village entrance.
The installation employs the moire effect: two curved, perforated aluminum plates with identical apertures but differing angles overlap, producing ripple-like interference patterns. As passers-by move, these ripples appear to shift, evoking the motion of waves and symbolizing Shenchong Village’s rich marine culture.
