nutjaivililj -From Now Into the Future

In the Paiwan language, nutjaivililj means “the future” or “a later time,” while also implying a spatial orientation—something positioned behind. In this Indigenous worldview, we stand in the present, facing our past, with the future unfolding at our backs. History stretches before us, shaping and propelling the future that follows. We grow not by charging ahead, but by stepping backward—guided by ancestral memory—into a more expansive world.

The spatial design of the nutjaivililj exhibition reinterprets Indigenous cultural values through an architectural language rooted in nature. Drawing from forests, mist, woven textures, firelight, and coastal rock formations, the space transforms into a dynamic, multi-sensory landscape that resonates with ancestral presence and ecological rhythms.

Staggered platforms and partitions made of colorful ramie threads create an environment reminiscent of forest paths, guiding visitor circulation intuitively through the exhibition. Low, circular display pedestals encourage communal engagement, recalling the warmth of gathering around a tribal fire. The spatial configuration emphasizes flow, intimacy, and layered storytelling.

Interactive technologies are integrated to enhance cultural engagement. Immersive projections and ambient soundscapes support each thematic zone. In the “Have You Eaten Yet?” section, a digital hearth anchors a virtual cooking experience, surrounded by traditional tools and ingredients. In the weaving zone, vertical light beams simulate warp and weft, allowing visitors to physically step into the texture of Indigenous aesthetics. A full-scale tatala (Lashed-Lug Boat) installation is suspended in the central void, accompanied by projected ocean waves and chanting voices—connecting the ground and upper floors in both form and narrative.

nutjaivililj is designed not merely as a display but as a participatory environment—one that supports cultural continuity through sensory engagement, spatial empathy, and immersive design strategies.
