The First Commercial Bank Yilan Branch: A Fusion of History and Elegance
Located in Yilan’s old town, where Qing-era Kavalan City and the Japanese colonial-era once thrived, the restored First Commercial Bank Yilan Branch stands as a striking architectural gem. With its Western classical façade and artistic installations by local artist Jimmy, it exudes a nostalgic yet romantic atmosphere, becoming a city landmark.
The bank traces its origins to the Taiwan Industrial and Commercial Bank, which established its Yilan branch in 1915. In 1921, a reinforced concrete and brick hall was built at its current location. After multiple post-war name changes, it was finally renamed "First Commercial Bank."
The building reflects Japan’s Taisho-era architecture, influenced by the Western Renaissance style. This trend was widely adopted in government and private buildings. The red brick exterior features horizontal terrazzo bands, pilasters, and a decorative parapet with a central circular relief. Inside, the high-ceilinged hall creates an open, airy ambiance. The structure conveys solidity and elegance, showcasing classical beauty.
Preserving this landmark was challenging, but dedicated architects meticulously sourced red bricks to restore Yilan’s last surviving Taisho-era bank. Today, the First Commercial Bank Yilan Branch remains operational while preserving its historic integrity, serving as a rare model of heritage banking architecture with historical and economic significance.
