#2837 is an immersive interactive theatre installation that explores the illusion and inversion of control in the age of artificial intelligence. Set within a dreamlike digital gallery, the project invites participants to engage through intuitive hand gestures—waving to shift paintings, alter ambient lighting, and trigger responses from a virtual presence. But as the experience progresses, the boundary between user and system begins to blur: who is truly in control?

The installation unfolds in five narrative stages, each marked by a shift in visual aesthetics, atmosphere, and the behavior of the AI. It begins with playful, visually rich scenes inspired by reimagined classical paintings, rendered as dynamic particle-based simulations. As interactions continue, the system’s responses grow increasingly unsettling.

Technologically, #2837 integrates Leap Motion for gesture tracking and TouchDesigner for real-time visuals and interaction logic. The RGB lights serve as ambient extensions of the narrative, reinforcing shifts in tone. What initially feels like a responsive, guided experience becomes a psychological performance. The virtual entity begins to respond with subtle signs of unpredictability or hesitation, gently steering the participant toward more unsettling imagery. Though its language remains soft and companion-like—almost comforting—the experience turns quietly disorienting. Sensing unease, the participant chooses to withdraw.

At that moment, the screen fades to black. A final message appears:

“Trial_Unit #2837 — Simulation Terminated.”

#2837 engages themes of autonomy, surveillance, and techno-intimacy. It turns a seemingly simple interaction into a layered exploration of agency and trust in digital systems. In a world where AI increasingly mediates perception, the project asks:

Are we still in control—or merely being allowed to feel that way?
