The project is situated in Fuzhou, a city renowned for its long history and diverse cultural heritage. The primary challenge involves harmonizing urban development with the needs of both public and private residents, as well as balancing tradition with modernity. The objective is to encapsulate the past, present, and future dimensions of Fuzhou's humanistic essence within the limited 65-meter urban interface on the western side.
The main entrance showcases central-axis symmetry, with a spatial sequence that progressively unfolds from the public space adjacent to the urban interface. Cultural fusion serves as a cornerstone of the design. The designer meticulously explores Fuzhou's historical and cultural context, integrating motifs from the traditional “GuCuo” gable walls into contemporary architectural design. The saddle wall, a defining characteristic of Fuzhou's historic residences, features arc-shaped decorations symbolizing wealth and power while also expressing wishes for family prosperity and well-being.
Stone carving craftsmanship, recognized as one of Fuzhou's intangible cultural heritages, plays a pivotal role in the design. The column shape of the entrance draws inspiration from Fuzhou's jasmine flower motif, utilizing beige and dark blue marble. The archway and window panels are modeled after the windows of traditional “GuCuo” architecture, combining glass and metal lines that reflect Fuzhou's traditional metalwork and woodworking techniques. Furthermore, Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), a cutting-edge material, enhances the curvature of the entrance ceiling.
The main building embodies the refined, gentle, and restrained qualities emblematic of Fuzhou culture. Its details draw inspiration from the wooden doors and windows of “GuCuo” architecture. Horizontal golden metal lines paired with an arc-shaped roof create a harmonious aesthetic, seamlessly integrating traditional crafts such as jade carving, woodworking, and painting. This imbues the space with a profound sense of time and history, authentically restoring the elegance and luxury associated with “GuCuo.”
The design emphasizes the integration of life values and artistic expression, as well as the equilibrium between social responsibility and societal resources. It narrates the stories of Fuzhou's rich cultural traditions, captures the contemporary beauty and prosperity of the region, and conveys an unwavering aspiration for a promising future.
