Located in the heart of Hongkou District, Shanghai, the project carries the century-old commercial legacy of Sichuan North Road and the emotional memory of Shanghai’s vibrant street life. Taking “lane culture” as the core catalyst, the project adopts curatorial, scenographic, and gamified spatial strategies to redefine the relationship among people, goods, and space, revitalizing urban energy and cultural resonance after years of dormancy.
The overall design follows the narrative thread of “A Century of Time Travel × East-West Fusion × Dialogue Across Time and Space,” integrating Shikumen architectural language with contemporary technology to create a living stage that bridges history and the future. Spatially, the project constructs a multidimensional environment including an immersive cultural atrium, a vertical exhibition escalator, an interactive social theater, and a lane-style commercial main street—enhancing the city’s sense of publicness and social engagement. In terms of material application, traditional elements such as red bricks, vintage patterned tiles, glazed glass, Art Deco ironwork, and modern components like 3D lenticular panels are skillfully combined to unify visual expression and emotional resonance. The “Return of the Birds” atrium installation employs mirrored surfaces to visually dissolve structural obstructions, amplifying aesthetic impact. Adhering to principles of green and low-carbon development, the project integrates renewable materials, energy-efficient renovation of historic buildings, vertical greening, and smart environmental systems—contributing to ecological renewal and sustainable operation. The project is not only a commercial reconstruction, but a cultural renaissance and an exploration of future urban lifestyles.
