The Blue Shell project aims to save the Xiangshan sea and its traditional fishing industry, which is deteriorating due to offshore red tides, through an innovative approach to fish market architecture. Unlike traditional architectural design portfolios, the fish market focuses on the design of innovative materials and the optimization of fish market service processes. The fish market, called “Blue Shell”, will be anchored offshore, with the fish market on the surface and seafood and cyanobacteria cultivated underwater through vertical layering from top to bottom. This will ensure freshness of the ingredients, and the farmed cyanobacteria will also compete to take over the living space of the main red tide algae, such as methanogens and diatoms. The main material of the fish market will be a new type of cyanobacterial bioconcrete, which will allow the fish market to expand itself, and at the same time, the growth of cyanobacteria absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide, making it a large-scale carbon-negative building project.
