Fuyuan is located in the “urban backyard” of Jin’an District, Fuzhou, embraced by Lao’an Mountain and Dengyun Lake, with a forest coverage rate of over 65%. Just six kilometers from the city center, the site benefits from convenient access to healthcare, including several tertiary hospitals within 5 kilometers, while planning more than 930 elderly-friendly units. This unique geographical setting provides both tranquility and accessibility, creating an ideal foundation for a wellness-oriented senior living community.

The design concept draws inspiration from Fuzhou’s historic Sanfang Qixiang, extracting the curve elements of the saddle wall and reinterpreting them with modern design language. This approach not only pays tribute to the city’s cultural roots but also reconstructs the courtyard pattern and architectural texture of “Old Fuzhou.” Landscape design echoes the local narrative through the “Walking Nine Blessings” system, which transforms Fuzhou’s cultural heritage—Mountain Blessing, Banyan Blessing, Lane Blessing, Martial Blessing, Opera Blessing, Flower Blessing, Art Blessing, Light Blessing, and Tea Blessing—into nine layers of spatial experience. Each step becomes a cultural pursuit, and every scene evokes emotional resonance, integrating tradition with daily life.

The community adopts a one-axis three-zone layout, consisting of a vitality center, independent living area, and rehabilitation hospital. The vitality center serves as the core, featuring a Four Seasons Flower Hall as the social hub, along with a swimming pool, fitness room, nutrition and food center, and a multi-functional banquet hall. Together, these facilities provide residents with comprehensive wellness services and opportunities for social interaction, physical health, and lifelong learning.

Design challenges included adapting the mountainous terrain to elderly mobility needs. The team addressed this through accessible circulation systems, barrier-free elevators, and landscape design aligned with natural topography. Local scenery and culture were seamlessly integrated to ensure convenience, safety, and enjoyment.

Sustainability is embedded in the project. Healing flower landscapes, pink-and-white seasonal gardens, and staggered viewing platforms offer restorative experiences. This approach enhances ecological sustainability while fostering emotional attachment to the land.

By weaving cultural memory, natural resources, and modern wellness functions, Fuyuan creates not just a residence, but a poetic and dignified environment for aging gracefully in Fuzhou.
