On a narrow plot in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, pressed between adjoining walls, the house once struggled with limited daylight and poor airflow. Its transformation turned those constraints into a framework for order, where family life and cultural resonance now stand in balance. The project did not chase spectacle but pursued coherence, drawing on belief, material continuity, health, and proportion as its frame.
For a family marked by perseverance and faith, the design team strived to craft a dwelling that could embody both resilience and offering. Motifs distilled from faith traditions were abstracted into doors and railings, recalling the generosity and blessing of the Miracle of the Bread and Fish. Rather than explicit imagery, symbolic cues were quietly translated into daily surfaces throughout, allowing belief to dissolve into the fabric of living.
Alongside these cultural references, the design also addressed wellbeing central to every decision, aligning with an ecological commitment to durable, low-impact materials. Circulation was choreographed into rhythm with an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system to ensure continuous fresh air exchange, and reclaimed stone was reintroduced to anchor continuity. Marble extended as veins across ceilings and planes, dissolving boundaries between functions while setting a restrained yet dignified tone. Ceilings avoided excessive ornamentation, relying instead on plaster finishes and artful coatings that minimize dust, age with patina, and reduce maintenance.
The result is not a decorative gesture but a composed architecture of coherence. Public and private realms are joined by sequences of collection and memory, while material and technical strategies safeguard both health and environment. Spaces remain maintainable and enduring. The home holds its narrative quietly, offering a dwelling measured by cultural resonance, wellbeing, and long-term responsibility.
