D+ is a multifunctional performing arts and community center at Daystar Academy, Beijing's first bilingual school to establish a K-12 social innovation program, repurposed from an underutilized gymnasium. Due to its enclosed nature and peripheral location on campus, students rarely visited the building voluntarily. The design team realized that simply adding multiple functions would not eliminate the space's sense of alienation. A fundamental shift in spatial concept was necessary: from enclosed to open, from formal to fluid, and from passive reception to active engagement. The design response was to invert the conventional theater paradigm by turning the stage inside out and drawing the audience outside in. Rather than isolating performance from its context, the theater is embedded within the living ecology of the campus, creating a hybrid cultural landscape that dissolves boundaries between performer and audience, interior and exterior, art and daily life.
A 16-meter operable glass wall opens the stage to an outdoor amphitheater, forming a seamless indoor–outdoor performance system with nature as the set. Terraced turf and tensile canopies create a performative terrain equally suited to formal events and spontaneous gatherings. Inside, natural light, flexible seating, and a restrained material palette support fluid transitions between theater, exhibition, dining, and community uses.
Rejecting spectacle in favor of resilience, D+ minimizes demolition, reuses structure, and integrates passive systems, cutting energy consumption to less than half that of comparable venues. Beyond sustainability, it is conceived as a natural field of perception: inviting performers to awaken new senses in dialogue with nature, and audiences to rediscover the arts as part of an immersive everyday landscape. It is not merely a renovation of physical space, but a bold reinvention of the theatrical paradigm—where performance is integrated into nature and daily life, allowing architecture, art, and community to deeply intertwine. Since its opening, D+ has become a vital civic and cultural anchor for Daystar and the surrounding community.
