The theme of this project is "care". The requirement is to explore and select a group of people who need to be cared for from the historical bacground and social environment of downtown Oakland, and to improve the living environment of this group of people by designing urban intervention which meet their current situation and needs, so as to achieve the purpose of care.
The group that the design chose is the elderly people in Chinatown. They have been out of their original cultural environment for a long time, but are still not fully integrated into American society due to issues such as communication barriers and racial segregation. As growing older, the y desperately need an environment that provides them with a sense of cultural belonging.
The idea of this project is to create social and activity spaces in residential buildings for the elderly people in Chinatown. Make intervention in the building with public spaces, and build interaction for people.
