Population aging is a defining global trend, and China leads with the world’s largest and fastest-growing elderly population. This project introduces an innovative Adaptive Reuse design for senior care, transforming a dilapidated, long-abandoned office building in the city center into an attractive elderly care facility. Selected as an official Beijing Municipal Government document for urban renewal case guides, it is the only demonstration project for renewing old, inefficient buildings.
The design introduces a pioneering concept: “Courtyard Living for Seniors, Reimagined with a Beijing Soul.” It offers a balanced lifestyle—where residents engage with neighbors and community activities, retreat into private, peaceful spaces, or enjoy the vibrant central courtyard by growing vegetables and flowers, exercising, walking quietly, or sharing intimate conversations, nurturing comprehensive well-being.
The master plan draws on Beijing’s iconic Siheyuan courtyard residences. By preserving the original layout and architectural elements, the design enhances the spatial flow to create an environment that extends the idea of “home” while evoking the resonance of “courtyard life”.
This premium, intelligent senior care center integrates Beijing’s heritage with community-based senior care services. It provides holistic, one-stop support, organized into efficient functional zones: rehabilitation and health management, residential living, community service hubs, recreational and fitness facilities, and logistical support areas.
To meet the functional and emotional needs of high-end health care, while honoring the distinctive lifestyle of Beijing’s older generation, the design reimagines the traditional Siheyuan with imperial-inspired architectural elements and colors.
Innovation material use creates a dialogue between heritage and modernity. Original architectural elements with unique characters are preserved and repurposed, while advanced materials are carefully introduced for contemporary senior care and structural safety—all while maintaining visual harmony.
Designed in full compliance with China’s “Assessment Standard for Green Building,” the project prioritizes sustainability and well-being. The landscape design, guided by the vision of “Experiencing Beijing’s Charm, discovering a Sanctuary for Well-being,” transforms an urban site into a lush, light-filled retreat. As residents move through shifting patterns of light and shadow, they enter a serene sanctuary that captures the elegance of a traditional imperial garden—an urban haven were nature and heritage come together in harmony.
