SILK HILL is a cultural project proposed to reestablish the identity of Korea’s silk industry, which has flourished for over a century, and to celebrate Jinju as one of the world’s five most renowned silk-producing regions. Facing decline due to diversification in textiles and rising labor costs, the project aims to revitalize the heritage of Jinju silk while positioning itself as a symbolic cultural landmark that represents Korean silk on the global stage.
The SILK HILL Museum is envisioned not merely as an exhibition hall but as an open cultural complex for tourists, local residents, and workers from the nearby silk industrial district. Its outdoor plaza, rooftop garden, and interior exhibition halls are designed with flexibility to accommodate programs of diverse scales and formats. Within this landscape, visitors can enjoy walking, resting, viewing exhibitions, attending performances, or participating in markets and events, experiencing the museum as part of their everyday life.
A defining feature of the project is its continuous circulation. The spatial flow seamlessly connects the rooftop to the plaza, then to the exhibition halls and educational spaces, creating an uninterrupted journey through the museum. This fluid movement allows visitors to naturally explore the site while engaging in a wide range of activities. Exhibitions, education, and cultural events are organically linked, fostering an integrated cultural experience where play, communication, and relaxation coexist.
SILK HILL is also designed as a sustainable and environmentally conscious building. It incorporates solar, geothermal, and fuel cell energy systems to reduce energy consumption, while its green roofs and landscaped courtyards create ecological outdoor spaces. This approach establishes the project not only as an architectural facility but also as a model of sustainable energy use in harmony with its natural surroundings.
Ultimately, SILK HILL aspires to become a new cultural symbol that merges heritage and modernity with sustainability. It will honor the history and tradition of Korea’s silk industry, while serving as an open cultural venue where communities and visitors come together, ensuring that the legacy of Jinju silk continues to inspire future generations.
