This project is the stage design for Joseph Haydn’s opera Armida, a work centered on love, power, and conflict. The design explores the dialogue between nature and architecture, each serving as a symbol of the protagonists. Nature represents Armida’s magical power, while architecture embodies the heroic ideals of the male figure. Their interaction on stage mirrors both attraction and tension: nature grows through architecture, suggesting emotional dependence, while the collapse of built structures reveals the vulnerability of masculinity.
The stage was imagined as a dark, organic landscape where natural and architectural elements merge. Trees and fragments of structures intertwine, creating a space that feels both magical and unstable. This environment reflects the opera’s themes of desire, transformation, and struggle. At times, natural forms dominate the scene to underline Armida’s strength; at other moments, architectural presence asserts itself, representing the resistance of the male hero. Scenic elements shifted in height and presence, echoing the emotional rhythm of the story. Light played a crucial role, animating the trees and emphasizing moments of power, intimacy, or conflict.
Ultimately, the design demonstrates how stage space can extend the narrative of opera. By blending the organic with the constructed, the fragile with the monumental, the set becomes an active participant in the drama. It provides a visual and emotional landscape where music, performance, and environment are inseparable, allowing the audience to experience the opera in a deeper and more immersive way.
