COLI Beijing Red Door Residential presents a sophisticated case study in site-specific landscape design, demonstrating how deep cultural engagement can inform a forward-looking residential community. Its landscape is organized through a "Dual-Axis" framework, a conceptual and functional strategy derived from a critical analysis of the adjacent central axis's ceremonial power and the Forbidden City's balance of order with organic complexity.
The Ceremonial Axis provides a strong architectural identity and a dignified, hierarchical transition from the city to the home, directly acknowledging the project's significant location. Conversely, the Leisure Axis operates as a flexible and social spine, comprising a series of programmatically diverse gardens—including a multi-functional Social Plaza, narrative-driven children's playgrounds, and therapeutic landscapes—that activate the community and support modern lifestyles. This clear zoning effectively resolves the core programmatic challenge of integrating collective identity with individualized living patterns.
Innovation is equally present in the project's material and ecological execution. Custom-designed architectural screens abstract traditional motifs into contemporary elements, while a richly layered planting scheme ensures biodiversity and seasonal dynamism. The project further distinguishes itself by transforming technical requirements, such as fire access and utility covers, into integrated design features. This holistic approach, which threads cultural narrative, functional clarity, and meticulous detail into a single vision, results in a landscape that is not a mere amenity but a vital, functioning ecosystem for contemporary living.
