Danan Forest Park, located in Bade District, Taoyuan City, spans approximately 16.6 hectares and was formerly a closed military base. Following the military’s withdrawal in 2017, the unexpected discovery of the Black-naped Oriole—a Class II Protected Species in Taiwan—prompted the city government to shift its original plan for residential and industrial development toward the creation of an urban forest centered on ecological conservation.
The park’s design is guided by three core strategies: subtractive design, nature-based solutions, and ecological restoration, aiming to integrate environmental education with community life and breathe new life into the site. A total of 2,729 existing trees were preserved, and 1,928 native trees were newly planted, while an 8-hectare ecological core area was established, with seasonal and nighttime restrictions on human activity to provide a safe haven for wildlife.
Materials from the former military site were repurposed to a rainwater reuse and ecological pond system, and eco-friendly structures, demonstrating a commitment to carbon reduction and low-impact development. Throughout the planning process, the city actively engaged local voices through guided citizen walks and civic cafés, transforming old military buildings into diverse community facilities. To date, over 170 environmental education events have been held, turning this former military zone into a shared space where ecology and culture coexist—embodying Taoyuan’s evolving vision for sustainable development and progressive urban governance.
Danan Forest Park, through cross-agency collaboration between local and central government and the signing of a formal Memorandum of Understanding, has successfully restored approximately 898 rare native plants and documented a cumulative increase of 91 bird species within the park. Its integrated water system enables the site to retain stormwater from up to 350mm of daily rainfall within 24 hours, achieving zero surface runoff—strengthening both ecological resilience and urban flood management.
