IZUMI NURSING HOME

This project redefines the role of a special nursing home as a highly public, community-oriented facility by creating an open, evolving environment that grows in tandem with its surroundings. The interior design framework is built on the concept of fostering a sustainable living ecosystem—one in which residents, staff, and local community members encounter one another naturally and form a gentle continuity of daily activity.
Spatial planning prioritizes permeability and sensory connection. In the community café and multipurpose lounge, the design integrates visual and atmospheric cues from the surrounding landscape—subtle breezes, shifting greenery, and soft daylight—to blur the boundary between interior and exterior. Material selection focuses on natural finishes such as wood and hand-troweled plaster, which introduce warmth and depth while amplifying the presence of reflected light and the movement of planted elements.
At the facility’s threshold, a calibrated gradation of color inspired by the exterior palette, combined with a lighting strategy that emphasizes soft diffusion and balanced luminance, creates a seamless transition from outdoor approach to interior arrival. This continuity allows visitors and local residents to perceive the building as an inclusive extension of the community fabric.
The design is anchored by the dual themes of light and chromatic resonance. Daylight is choreographed to appear as fine particles circulating through the space, revealing subtle shifts in time and season. Reflecting the site’s heritage as a former flower-production area, more than one hundred hues and material variations were curated to evoke the rhythm, diversity, and quiet vitality of a blooming landscape. These atmospheric layers—rustling plantings, gradated illumination, and dynamic color harmonies—are intended to gently stimulate residents’ sensibilities while providing restorative calm for staff.
Ultimately, the project aspires to establish a living environment that breathes with the community: a serene yet dynamically textured place where daily life, work, and local culture intertwine and continue to evolve.
