Black Piece

This project is a newly built residence located within an apartment community. Before planning began, the site consisted of a fully open space without partitions, except for the bathroom and kitchen areas. The owner hoped to create two bedrooms and a storage room while maximizing the openness of the shared living area. The large windows are a major advantage of the project, so the design focuses on meeting functional needs and allocating space while maintaining overall cohesion and a sense of spaciousness.
Within the elongated rectangular floor plan, the design begins with a centrally positioned black low cabinet, which anchors the circulation from the entrance while delineating the living room, dining area, and workspace. The cabinet’s 45-degree shift opens up a broader spatial field, complemented by a custom sofa aligned to the same angle, establishing a generous visual connection to the expansive window views and the overall public zone.
At the center of the cabinet, a perforated opening introduces controlled visual permeability and integrates the dining tabletop into a multifunctional element. The cabinet concludes with a lower, curved form, softening the spatial boundary and allowing flexibility for varied living scenarios or arrangements. This creates a fluid environment in which the functions of the living room, dining area, and workspace can seamlessly extend and adapt as needed.
Beyond the black low cabinet, all functional millwork is arranged in alignment with the rectilinear geometry of the floor plan, creating a deliberate contrast between primary and secondary elements. The space also employs a combination of the low cabinet and slatted screens to define areas requiring privacy. These slatted components provide controlled visual permeability while introducing a repeated architectural rhythm, giving the cabinet system a multifaceted expression.
The extensive tall storage units are seamlessly integrated with the partition panels, minimizing visual bulk and reducing any sense of spatial compression typically associated with large storage requirements.
